Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward have serious competition for who’s going to be the best rookie quarterback

The Seattle Seahawks are excited about their future, as the 11 drafted rookies – which includes two defensive players and nine offensive – feel very optimistic about arriving at the franchise.

The NFC West team finished 2nd in their conference, with a 10-7 record that wasn’t good to make the playoffs. But they hope to improve that this season with major additions during the last couple of months.

One of those moves include drafting Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe with the No. 92 pick overall, a QB and a dynamic athlete that would add up to the Seahawks offense. “It’s the right spot because I know it’s a community of people that believe in me, that’s all in on me,” said the rookie after getting selected.

Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward have serious competition

While the main story of the 2025 NFL Draft was the fact that Shedeur Sanders fell all the way to the fifth round with the 144th pick overall by the Cleveland Browns, the least surprising thing about the event was the No.1 pick being Miami Hurricanes standout Cam Ward, who’s most likely going to be the starter for the Tennessee Titans.

Both quarterbacks are viewed as the most talented players at their positions out of this class, which could be an extra motivation for Jalen Milroe. A two-year starter at Alabama, the 6’2 standout passed for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns while completing 64.3% of his passes, and also rushed for a team-leading 726 yards and 20 rushing TDs.

Coming from a military family taught Milroe, “determination, grit, goals – short term goals, long term goals and understanding that it takes a team. I don’t believe in the word “self-made” at all. It takes a team to accomplish anything that you want to.”

A tough battle for the starting spot

Jalen Milroe knows that, if he wants to start in his rookie year – or even have a chance to show his skills during the regular season -, he’s going to win one of his biggest battles of his career because Seattle already features three quarterbacks with significant starting experience in Sam Darnold, Drew Lock and Sam Howell.

“I’m coming to learn, grow and bring nothing but positive vibes to the offense, fulfilling all that as a necessity in my role on the team. Of course once I get there, I’ll understand my niche for sure, but I’m competing no matter what day it is, no matter how many reps I get..”

While some projections had Milroe going as high as the first round, he isn’t focused on where was selected, but rather on the situation he’s in now, and the fact that he’ll have an opportunity to prove himself in Seattle. “I still have to come in and prove myself and earn that trust and respect of guys in the locker room,” Milroe said.
