Shedeur Sanders, the talented quarterback from Colorado, has recently found himself at the center of a media controversy following his selection by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Despite a standout college career, Sanders’ entry into the NFL has been marred by public criticism and media scrutiny.

The controversy began when Sanders visited John Marshall High School in Cleveland, an event documented and shared by his associate, Hellion ‘Boog’ Knight.

ESPN Cleveland radio host Aaron Goldhammer criticized the social media postings, suggesting they were self-promotional.

“Shedeur did NOT post anything! I posted it,” Hellion ‘Boog’ Knight posted Thursday on X in a quote tweet after initial criticism. “He didn’t ask me, or anyone else to post anything. Nor did he ask for a hundred cameras to be on him upon his entrance into the school.

“This isn’t his first school visit. He’s done MANY, in various cities & states. This is just spewed hate.”

Knight, affiliated with Young Money APPA Sports, continued to post evidence of Sanders’ charitable actions and called for media accountability, expressing his willingness to take criticism on behalf of Sanders.

This incident highlights concerns about Sanders’ off-field persona and the media attention his camp brings, despite his positive community engagement. While some view his actions as self-promotion, others see them as genuine efforts to connect with the community.

The differing perspectives underscore the challenges athletes face in managing public perceptions.

Sanders already making headlines

Beyond the media controversy, Sanders’ draft experience has been unconventional. Once projected as a potential first-round pick, he unexpectedly fell to the fifth round.

Reports suggest that his interview performance may have contributed to this slide, with an anonymous NFL coach labeling it “the worst formal interview” and criticizing Sanders’ attitude and gameplay.

Such deviations from expected conduct reportedly raised eyebrows among NFL personnel, who later inquired about the incident. These critiques have sparked debates about the importance of professionalism and interpersonal behavior in the draft process.

Despite the challenges, Sanders remains focused on his NFL career. The Cleveland Browns, in need of a quarterback, selected him with the hope that he can develop into a franchise player. General Manager Andrew Berry praised Sanders’ poise, intelligence, and calm demeanor, indicating confidence in his potential.

However, the team is also aware of the need for Sanders to adapt to the professional environment and address any concerns raised during the draft process.

As Sanders embarks on his NFL journey, he faces the dual challenge of proving himself on the field while managing the media’s portrayal of his off-field actions. The coming seasons will be pivotal in determining whether he can navigate these challenges and fulfill the promise that made him a highly regarded prospect.
