Shedeur Sanders already has a CFL team after being passed over by several NFL teams

The 2025 NFL Draft will go down as one of the most interesting in history, largely due to the story of Shedeur Sanders. The highly publicized quarterback, who had been projected for a year as a first-round talent, was passed over and slid dramatically until the fifth round, where he was eventually picked up by the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns, who had already selected Dillon Gabriel from the Oregon Ducks in the third round, surprised many by taking Shedeur Sanders in the fifth. The quarterback from the Colorado Buffaloes had to wait as 143 players were selected before his name was finally called.

Things won’t be easy for Shedeur, especially because he’ll either aim to earn the starting role right away, or if results don’t go well with another quarterback, the pressure will fall on Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski to start Sanders. It will be an entertaining and uncertain season for the Browns franchise.

Shedeur Sanders already claimed in the CFL

According to Justin Dunk of 3DownNation, the Toronto Argonauts have placed quarterback Shedeur Sanders on their exclusive negotiation list. This means that if Sanders ever decides to play in the CFL, Toronto would have the advantage in signing Deion Sanders’ son.

In his senior season with the University of Colorado, Sanders threw for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions over 13 games. He was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and earned second-team All-American honors. With those numbers, many believed he might not be a first-round pick, but surely a second-rounder. What shocked everyone was that he fell all the way to the fifth round.

Because of this situation, the Argonauts acted quickly to secure his CFL rights. The league allows teams to have 45 players on their negotiation lists, giving them exclusive rights if any of those players choose to play in the CFL.

The Argonauts are currently led by Chad Kelly, who was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 2023. The Canadian season kicks off in less than a month, and Toronto’s first preseason game will be against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
