Shaquille O’Neal crashes into ESPN set and literally breaks the screen

It was supposed to be a festive halftime moment during the New York Knicks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Christmas Day NBA game, but what unfolded on ESPN’s Inside the NBA set quickly became the funniest, most viral highlight of the day. Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal challenged longtime co-host Kenny Smith to a playful sprint to the giant video board and chaos ensured.

The segment started lightheartedly, with Smith teasing Shaq on the holiday set. But when the 7-foot-1 former NBA champion powered through to “win” the race, he didn’t stop in time. Shaq’s full-speed collision sent the massive screen toppling backward, creating sparks, glitches, and instant legend. Co-hosts Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley could barely contain their laughter as producers quickly placed traffic cones around the wreckage and fans online erupted with memes likening the moment to a Kool-Aid Man wall smash.

Shaq causes chaos at ESPN

What made the stunt even more delightful was seeing a different, lighter side of the broadcast. In an era when sports presenters are expected to be polished and pre-planned, this felt spontaneous, a real-time slice of fun that caught viewers and co-hosts off guard. The moment didn’t just steal halftime coverage; it became halftime coverage, generating viral clips and reactions across X, Instagram and TikTok within minutes.

Shaq’s media presence goes well beyond one wild Christmas Day stunt. After retiring from the NBA in 2011 as one of the most dominant big men in league history, he transitioned into broadcasting and entertainment with ease. He became a household voice on the iconic studio show Inside the NBA, originally on TNT with Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley beginning in 2011.

This year’s NBA broadcast landscape looks a little different: Inside the NBA is moving from TNT to ESPN and ABC, a historic shift sparked by new NBA media rights deals that reshaped who carries marquee league coverage. Despite network changes, fans are expecting the same chemistry and humor from Shaq and the crew in the 2025-26 season and beyond.

For O’Neal, this isn’t his first chaotic moment on live TV and it almost certainly won’t be his last. From surprise appearances on NBA Countdown to charismatic on-air antics that blend basketball insight and humor, Shaq continues to redefine what it means to be an analyst in the modern sports media world.
