Heading into last weekend’s major boxing matchup, there wasn’t necessarily a complete consensus on who was going to come out on top between Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez. Stevenson has never lost, so he’s always a pretty good bet, but Lopez had rattled off several good performances leading up to the crucial fight.
Lopez had no answer for Stevenson in Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, though. Stevenson’s elite defense was on full display, leaving Lopez punching air to the tune of only 15.4% of his punches landing. Lopez has long been a confident, if somewhat arrogant, personality. That was wiped away by Stevenson, and it was clear to Lopez’s closest companion – and family member – in the ring.

Following his big win, Stevenson couldn’t help but laugh when the thought of Lopez getting a new trainer surfaced in an interview. Lopez’s trainer is his father, Teofimo Lopez Sr., who has his own brash personality.
Stevenson recounted hearing his father tell his son, “What happened to your power, bro?“, in the ring during a break. Stevenson was more perturbed that Lopez Sr. doesn’t give his son any specific instructions.
Stevenson isn’t alone in wondering if Lopez is being held back by his father. Several fans called for Lopez Sr. to step down following the fight, which really exposed the boxer.
