As the Oklahoma City Thunder advance to their first NBA Finals in 13 years, the spotlight intensifies on franchise cornerstone Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The 26-year-old guard’s exceptional performance this season has not only earned him the league’s MVP award but also sparked discussions about his long-term future with the team.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder to a franchise-best 68-14 regular-season record, averaging 32.7 points per game.

His leadership and skill have been pivotal in OKC’s playoff run, culminating in a dominant victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves to secure a Finals berth.

Contract negotiations and future prospects

Amid the team’s success, Gilgeous-Alexander is eligible for a supermax extension projected at approximately $294.3 million over four years, potentially making him the first NBA player to earn over $80 million in a single season.

Notably, he has chosen to represent himself in these negotiations, a rare move among NBA players.

Thunder General Manager Sam Presti has expressed a commitment to building around Gilgeous-Alexander, emphasizing the importance of mutual dedication between the player and the organization.

Presti stated, “We have to provide that same kind of mutual commitment. We expect that all-in mentality from him”.

The Thunder’s strategy includes surrounding Gilgeous-Alexander with a strong supporting cast, featuring rising stars like Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams.

This trio has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence, with Holmgren and Williams providing significant contributions on both ends of the court.

As the Finals approach, the Thunder‘s focus remains on capturing their first championship since 1979. However, the outcome of Gilgeous-Alexander‘s contract negotiations will have lasting implications for the franchise’s future. Securing his commitment is crucial for maintaining the team’s competitive edge in the years to come.
