Sergio Ramos: between a flood of offers… and an ‘undesired’ retirement

Sergio Ramos feels like a ‘bull’. That’s why he would like to continue competing. He turns 40 on March 30, but he feels physically fit enough to continue a career full of success.

And he feels good physically… because he trains for it, not by magic. His ideal retirement would have been at Sevilla, but the current club officials did not allow him that dream.

Therefore, Sergio is currently considering the option of retirement or accepting some of the numerous offers he has had from Europe (some from Spain) and the Middle East (Qatar and Saudi Arabia, mainly). In Spain, Sergio would never play for another team (apart from Real Madrid or Sevilla), and the problem with offers from abroad is that they would take him away from his family, one of his priorities nowadays. That’s the problem

That’s why the decision is not an easy one, but it will not be long before it is known… in one way or another.

Ideally, it would have been Sevilla, but the club’s directors thwarted that dream based on a questionable argument: it is true that the central defender is involved in the business fund (Five Eleven Capital) that has launched a LOI (preferred purchase option) to buy the club, but this situation does not seem to be resolved before June. The timing was right (play, then retire and possible effective purchase) for what would have been a spectacular retirement, among other things, because Sergio, according to those who follow him closely, would have contributed a lot to Sevilla

Del Nido Carrasco, president of the club, explained his argument this month on ‘Canal Sur Radio’: “Sergio offered to return, but the club rejected the proposal,” he said, because of the “incompatibility” of having an owner who at the same time could be managed by other employees. “It could be the case – he said – that the owner was trained by other workers of the entity. I decided that it was incompatible and that is why Sergio does not play for Sevilla. We have no limit, and Sergio Ramos could not have played for free. The decision is mine. It had nothing to do with any person who works at the club, including the sporting one”. And that was that.

But the ‘Ramos case’ continues: we will see if he plays for another team in a league that signs him (he is a free agent) or we will see if it all ends in a well-deserved retirement for one of the absolute legends in the history of La Roja, Real Madrid and Sevilla.
