Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian shuts down racist attack with powerful message about Armenian pride

Alexis Ohanian, whose father immigrated to the United States after fleeing persecution, didn’t hesitate to defend his Armenian heritage when a social media user posted an inflammatory remark about him.

The incident unfolded after the talk show TBPN, hosted by John Coogan and Jordi Hays, announced on X that Ohanian would be their next guest. Beneath the announcement, one user responded with a racist slur, writing: “Trust a snake over an Armenian.”

Ohanian, who is known for being outspoken on social media, swiftly fired back with a firm and dignified reply that resonated with thousands online.

“You must really hate how much we thrive despite y’all’s best efforts,” he noted.

The entrepreneur’s message struck a chord, with fans and fellow Armenians commending his pride and refusal to ignore prejudice.

His response has since circulated widely, sparking broader discussions about racism toward ethnic minorities and the resilience of the Armenian diaspora.

A proud Armenian heritage

Ohanian’s connection to Armenia has long been a defining part of his identity. His father, Chris Ohanian, was born to Armenian parents in Turkey and emigrated to the U.S. to escape the persecution that stemmed from the Armenian genocide in the early 20th century.

In recent years, Ohanian has used his platform to advocate for Armenian causes, including supporting nonprofits and investing in initiatives that promote cultural and technological growth in the country. He has also participated in humanitarian efforts and has spoken publicly about the importance of preserving and celebrating Armenian history.

The attack on social media was particularly striking because of Ohanian’s longstanding commitment to uplifting his community, a commitment that has earned him respect beyond the tech world.

This isn’t the first time Ohanian has spoken out against racism or discrimination. Since stepping down from Reddit’s board in 2020, a move he said was motivated by his desire to see more diversity in leadership, he has continued to advocate for equity in both the tech and sports worlds.
