Scottie Scheffler reveals his caddy played a big hand in him securing the gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris as Ted Scott kept the world number one calm enough to bring the USA glory in France.
Despite looking like such a casual sport to play, the stars can become very frustrated when they’re not in their grove and just one bad shot can cost them severely at professional level and that’s what struck the 28-year-old at Le Golf National.
Whilst in a tough round, he was struggling with is putter on the green in particular and two-time Masters champion eventually saw red and wanted to snap the club in two. Step in Scott, who made sure he didn’t actually do that.
“I was walking off the green, and I was so frustrated,” Scheffler told the PGA Tour. “Tom Kim was kind of standing there.
“And I was looking at Teddy, like, ‘Can I break it?’ Teddy just kind of grabbed the putter out of my hand and said, ‘Not yet.’
“I was angry, but we both kind of turned it into a bit of a joke. If he’d said yes, I would’ve 100% snapped it over my knee right then and there.”
Scheffler heaps praise on Scott
Scheffler then rebounded to beat Tommy Fleetwood, Hideki Matsuyama and another 57 golfers from 33 nations to the gold medal, which he won by just one shot from his British rival and two shots from the third-place Japanese athlete.
And he made sure he gives credit to his caddy, and not for the first time either after recognising the role he played during his 2022 and 2024 Masters in Augusta, Florida, where he invited him on the victory walk.
“Teddy did a great job of making sure that we kept the golf course in front of us,” Scheffler told media. “I didn’t get off to the best start.
“But I had some key up-and-downs, and Teddy once again did a great job of keeping me in it.”
