Scottie Scheffler puts family before golf: “If it affects them, I’ll quit this sport”

Scottie Scheffler arrives at the Open Championship as the top favorite, despite an underwhelming performance last week in North Berwick. With his eyes set on lifting the prestigious Claret Jug and moving one step closer to the Grand Slam, the world No. 1 made it clear that while he loves to compete and win, golf is no longer his top priority in life.

Last week, the Texas native opened up about his current priorities. In a rare moment of candor for an elite athlete, Scheffler revealed that the sport that brought him to the top is no longer his main focus. His family-his wife Meredith and their son Bennett-is now his driving force.

Scheffler stands firm on his decision

During a press conference on Tuesday, Scheffler expanded on that idea with a powerful statement that caught the attention of fans and media alike:

“I’m fortunate to be here playing golf, but if golf were ever to affect my family life or the relationship I have with my wife or my son, that would be the last day I play this game for a living.”

These weren’t offhand remarks. For the 2022 Masters champion, finding balance between his career and personal life isn’t just a preference-it’s a deep conviction. Scheffler shared how much he enjoys every part of his routine, from competing on the world’s best courses to waking up early and working hard for his family.

The key role of Meredith Scheffler

His wife Meredith has been by his side since the beginning of his professional journey. She’s been his steady support through victories and his comfort during tough times. Now, with the birth of their first child, the family bond is stronger than ever-prompting Scheffler to reevaluate his relationship with the sport.

“Every day when I wake up early to go to work, my wife thanks me for working so hard. And when I get home, I try to thank her every single day for taking care of our son,” the golfer said with emotion.

Scheffler’s life philosophy

Beyond his athletic achievements, Scheffler has made it clear he’s not willing to sacrifice personal happiness for more trophies. His message resonates in a time when many athletes put performance above all else.

“This isn’t everything. It’s not the most important thing in my life. So I ask myself: why is it so important to me?” he reflected. “Because I’d rather be a great dad than a great golfer.”

With the Open Championship approaching, all eyes will be on him. But regardless of what happens on the course, Scottie Scheffler has already made one thing clear: his greatest victory is his family.
