Scandal over possible poisoning on the Beterbiev vs. Bivol billing: World title fight in Saudi Arabia canceled

The WBC lightweight title clash between Shakur Stevenson and Floyd Schofield is off following claims the latter has been poisoned, thrusting Saudi Arabia’s latest boxing night into controversy as fans wonder who an ominous “they” is.

Artur Beterbiev also prepares to face Dmitry Bivol in the highly anticipated boxing event in Riyadh, but Schofield‘s sudden exit, amid allegations of poisoning, has sent shockwaves through the boxing community and raised questions about the event’s integrity.

The 22-year-old from New Jersey had arrived in the Middle East and even participated in initial media engagements before being noticeably absent from the grand arrivals on Tuesday, fuelling speculation about his health and commitment to the fight.

Shortly thereafter, a post appeared on his social media, purportedly managed by his father and trainer, alleging, “They poisoned my son.” The account went on to accuse a masseuse associated with Stevenson‘s team of applying a suspicious cream before it was quickly deleted.

However, not before Stevenson‘s co-manager noticed the post and vehemently denied the allegations and demanded a public apology.

“This fighter [Schofield] should get advised on the defamation laws in our country,” Josh Dublin told BoxingScene. “Saying these things that slander Shakur does not come without legal consequences.

“Saying that his food was poisoned will not go unrecognized. [Schofield] is being put on notice right now.

“People might think there’s a kernel of truth in these lies [regarding the poisoning] by his father, when it seems to be a way for him to make an excuse he’s not going to fight.”

Who will Stevenson fight instead?

Efforts to find a replacement opponent for Stevenson have been swift. Unbeaten British boxer Josh Padley, boasting a record of 15 victories, is reportedly set to step in for Schofield on the night that also sees Daniel Dubois defend his IBF World Heavyweight Championship against Joseph Parker.

Prior to the event, Stevenson had expressed concerns about Schofield‘s commitment, especially after Schofield missed a press conference in London in another interesting twist to the story.
