As Travis Kelce mulls retirement and tries to heal from the embarrassment of a heavy defeat in Super Bowl LIX, he may need to comfort his partner Taylor Swift amid the fallout of vicious jeers sent her way during the Kansas City Chiefs‘ defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.
Swift was greeted with a chorus of boos each time she was shown on the Jumbotron at the Caesars Superdome, offering up a bemused look in one viral clip as the Chiefs suffered an embarrassing 40-22 loss in New Orleans. A new Super Bowl champion emerged as Kansas City‘s three-peat dreams went up in smoke, and Philadelphia‘s hero Saquon Barkley just can’t understand why Swift was lopped in to the on-field rivalry between the Eagles and the Chiefs.
Barkley still doesn’t get the Swift hate
In a new interview with Howard Stern, Barkley admitted that he “didn’t get” why Swift was roundly booed in New Orleans, as fans attempted to make a villain out of the world’s most recognizable pop star.
“She’s there supporting her significant other and she’s made the game bigger,” Barkley said of Swift cheering on Kelce and the Chiefs. “We’re all about, in football, we’re all about how can we expand the game and make it more internationally and we’re traveling to Brazil and we’re traveling to Mexico, and apparently we’re traveling to Australia soon, so we’re trying to expand the game and her being a part of it is only helping that, so I don’t get the slack that she’s getting.”
Barkley’s comments come not only in the wake of the Eagles’ Super Bowl triumph, but also mere days after Kelce admitted that it was an “honor” to welcome President Donald Trump to the Superdome as the first sitting president to watch a Super Bowl. During the election cycle last year, Swift endorsed Trump’s opponent, Kamala Harris; Trump ripped Swift for her decision to endorse the Democratic candidate and mocked her again after Kansas City lost the Super Bowl.
Kelce, who turns 36 in October, is poised to go on vacation with Swift in order to unwind from the grueling football season. One wonders if Barkley’s support for the “Cardigan” songstress will be up for discussion as the two talk about their next steps as a couple.
