Sandy Brondello issues a warning to the WNBA: Caitlin Clark is the head of the snake

Caitlin Clark has quickly established herself as one of the WNBA’s top players since her rookie season. The Indiana Fever star’s stellar 2025 performance earned her Rookie of the Year honors, and now, as she enters her second professional season, she’s becoming a major concern for her rivals-including New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello.

In her first year in the league, Clark led all players in assists with 8.4 per game, while also leading all rookies in scoring with 19.2 points per game. She contributed 5.7 rebounds per game, proving instrumental in guiding the Fever to the postseason.

Now, Clark is not only regarded as the face of the WNBA, but she’s also a leading contender for the regular season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award-placing her among elite stars like Napheesa Collier and A’ja Wilson. So, it’s no surprise that Brondello has issued a league-wide warning.

Brondello’s warning to the WNBA

On Saturday, Clark and the Fever hosted Brondello’s Liberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. As her team prepared for the matchup, the Liberty coach took time to discuss their opponents-focusing specifically on Clark’s impact.

Speaking with New York Post reporter Madeline Kenney, Brondello acknowledged that shutting down Clark was crucial if the Liberty hoped to secure a victory. “Caitlin’s the head of the snake, so we have to do a great job against her,” Brondello warned, underscoring the respect she has for the Fever’s young star.

However, the Liberty coach was quick to emphasize that Indiana is much more than just Clark. She urged her team to keep a close eye on Aliyah Boston, adding, “She has started the season really strong, and she’s a key matchup for us.”

The Liberty are loaded with talent

Despite Brondello’s warnings, she knows her squad is more than capable of competing at the highest level. The defending champions remain one of the strongest contenders for another Finals run, thanks to stars like Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu-who can go toe-to-toe with Clark in any matchup.

In the end, the Liberty eked out a narrow 90-88 victory over the Fever. But Brondello made one thing crystal clear-the WNBA is locked in on Clark, and the league won’t make things easy for its rising superstar.
