Saints’ Defense gets a shake-up: Peter Sirmon reportedly joins coaching staff

The New Orleans Saints are adding a defensive mind with a knack for forcing turnovers. Peter Sirmon, who spent the last five years as Cal’s defensive coordinator, is making the leap to the NFL to coach the Saints’ linebackers, sources confirm.

Sirmon’s time at Cal was defined by an aggressive, turnover-hungry defense. In 2023, the Bears led the nation in fumbles recovered (16) and tied for the top spot in total turnovers gained (28). Their run defense was just as impressive, ranking 14th in the country by allowing only 109.8 rushing yards per game.

A former linebacker himself, Sirmon knows the position inside and out. He played seven seasons in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans from 2000 to 2006, racking up nearly 350 tackles. After retiring as a player, he transitioned to coaching in 2008 and built an impressive résumé at Louisville, Mississippi State, Oregon, Tennessee, Washington, and USC before landing at Cal.

A fresh start in New Orleans: Sirmon joins saints’ defensive overhaul

Now, he joins a Saints team undergoing major changes under new head coach Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. The Saints are looking to refine their defense after an inconsistent 2023 campaign, and Sirmon’s ability to develop linebackers and create high-pressure defenses makes him a strong addition to the staff.

The NFL move marks uncharted territory for Sirmon as a coach, but his reputation as a defensive strategist suggests he’s ready for the challenge. His track record at Cal shows a knack for getting the most out of his players-a trait the Saints will hope translates to the professional level.

With Sirmon on board, the Saints’ linebacker corps will be a key unit to watch heading into the 2024 season.
