We live in a time where athletes all around the world have experienced a massive increase on home burglaries. In a new episode of this wave of crimes, a new victim has been claimed, sending shockwaves through the WNBA community. Sabrina Ionescu, the face of the New York Liberty and a 2024 champion, is reportedly reeling suffered a home robbery as her Southern California residence was targeted in a brazen, “horrifying” Monday night break-in.

The incident mirrors the trend that saw NFL superstars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in their Kansas City-area homes, which were invaded earlier this year, representing the growing sense of insecurity for athletes.

A break-in with $60,000 in losses

During the night of Monday, December 15, the quiet area of the Southern California neighborhood was shattered. According to reports confirmed by ‘TMZ Sports’, masked intruders broke-in into the home Ionescu shares with her husband, former NFL offensive lineman Hroniss Grasu.

Two masked suspects reportedly approached the rear of the property and smashed a glass door to access the entry. Once the got inside, the suspects “ransacked” the entire house. Authorities said, via NBC4, that approximately $60,000 worth of designer handbags were stolen from the property.

The suspects fled the scene in an unidentified vehicle before police could arrive. Fortunately, neither Ionescu nor Grasu were home at the time of the burglary. Even though both are safe, the psychological aftermovie of having your private sanctuary violated, will be a trauma hard to forget.

As of today, the Walnut Sheriff’s Station is the leading organism managing the investigation. Detectives are currently watching security camera footage from the property and neighboring homes to identify the masked men. Authorities confirmed that no arrests have been made so far.

A shared pattern of insecurity

Ionescu’s experience is not isolated, as it now becomes part of a disturbing pattern. Just months ago, the NFL world was stunned when Patrick Mahomes’ home was burglarized, followed quickly by another break-in at Travis Kelce’s mansion while he was playing.

These common thread in these cases is the harsh reality that professional athletes are deeply tracked and targeted by sophisticated burglary rings. For Ionescu and the rest of the WNBA, the incident serves as a stark reminder that athletic success often comes with an unintended price: an evident loss of privacy and personal safety.
