The New York Liberty are returning to the WNBA Finals for the second year in a row, but star player Sabrina Ionescu isn’t letting her team celebrate prematurely. Despite their hard-fought victory over the defending champions, Ionescu is reminding everyone that their mission isn’t complete.
The Liberty faced the Las Vegas Aces in a rematch of last year’s Finals, and this time, it was New York who triumphed. They closed out the series with a 76-62 victory on Sunday, winning the series 3-1. After going up 2-0, the Liberty dropped Game 3 but rebounded strongly in Game 4 to seal the win.
Ionescu was instrumental in the series-clinching win, scoring a game-high 22 points while adding seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Her impressive shooting-5-of-8 from beyond the arc-helped the Liberty maintain control throughout the game, building an 18-point lead.
Despite the impressive win over the reigning WNBA champions, Ionescu is keeping her teammates grounded. She reminded them that there’s still one more series to win before they can truly celebrate their success. “We’re not done yet,” Ionescu said after the victory, ensuring her team stays focused on the ultimate goal.
The Liberty, still seeking their first championship in the franchise’s 27-year history, need to keep their eyes on the prize as they prepare for the Finals.
Facing the Connecticut Sun
Up next, the Liberty will face the Connecticut Sun in the 2024 WNBA Finals. The Sun, who beat the second-seeded Minnesota Lynx 3-1 in their semifinal series, are also in pursuit of their first league title.
Both teams enter the Finals with the same goal, making this matchup one of determination and grit.
With Ionescu‘s leadership and the Liberty’s momentum, New York is focused on completing their journey and finally lifting the WNBA trophy.
