No one really thought Jake Paul would ever take such a massive risk in a boxing ring, but that’s exactly what he will do on December 19 in Miami, when he squares off against Anthony Joshua. When Paul called out Joshua for a fight, many took it as an utter joke; yet a couple of months later, it came to fruition.
This wasn’t supposed to happen; at least not initially. Gervonta Davis was the “easier” opponent for Paul due to the big size difference. Now, the tables have been turned on Joshua. But before Paul took the massive leap to face AJ, he had turned his attention to one of Davis’ former rivals, Ryan Garcia. Garcia revealed in a recent interview that he received an offer from Paul, but it wasn’t nearly enough to get him to bite.
Ryan Garcia turned down $20 million offer from Jake Paul
While speaking to Covers.com, Garcia claimed that he got a $20 million offer from Paul’s team after “Tank” fell through. Garcia didn’t seem to give it much thought, mainly because it was practically a no-win situation for him.
He’s 220 pounds. What are we talking about? I’m not going to let this dude think he’s that good because he’s a heavyweight and trying to fight 135-pounders. People are not going to think I’m good unless I knock him out. How am I going to knock out a 220-pound dude that somewhat knows how to box? Yeah, I could catch them, but they’re trying to fight with 12-ounce gloves.
This time, in a somewhat surprising development, Paul’s money couldn’t do the talking. Garcia did admit that a much-higher offer could have possibly persuaded him. If the offer was around $70 million – which appears to be Joshua’s number – then he would have given it plenty of thought.
“I definitely would consider it. 100%. I’d be stupid if I didn’t.“
But for $20 million, it just wasn’t enough for Garcia to enter a potential lose-lose situation. Instead, he will take on Mario Barrios for a shot at world title glory.
