Russell Wilson’s response after being dropped for Jaxson Dart revealed

Russell Wilson‘s role with the New York Giants has shifted dramatically after head coach Brian Daboll named rookie Jaxson Dart as the starting quarterback and now the 36-year-old winner’s reaction has been revealed.

Despite the benching, the one-time Super Bowl winner has been measured, emphasizing professionalism and commitment to mentoring the team’s young signal-caller as his NFL twilight story takes a bitter downturn.

From the moment Wilson arrived in New York, he was expected to be Daboll‘s primary quarterback, regardless of how camp unfolded for other contenders and the solid preseason efforts of the 22-year-old debutant underneath him.

While Dart impressed during training sessions, the decision to elevate him over Wilson was primarily performance-based ahead of the Week 4 clash with the Los Angeles Chargers, following defeats to the Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs.

And according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic: “Daboll broke the news face-to-face with both Wilson and Dart. Wilson was disappointed, but was the ultimate professional.”

Wilson’s reaction reflects his veteran experience and steady demeanor. Rather than expressing frustration publicly, he immediately focused on supporting Dart and contributing to the team’s success.

“No, I’m focused on helping this team win,” Wilson told reporters. “I’m focused on helping Jaxson.

“I’m focused on me getting ready to be the best version of me today on Wednesday. I want to be here.

“I love this organization, the process of it all. The guys in the locker room. I’m not giving up on us in this season.”

The decision has inevitably generated trade speculation as a proven veteran quarterback, Wilson is likely to attract attention from teams seeking stability under center such as the Cincinnati Bengals, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns.

With Joe Burrow currently managing injuries, Cincinnati could be a logical suitor. However, The Athletic reports that the Giants are not in a hurry to move Wilson on after agreeing to pay him $10m for the year.

His locker room presence, leadership, and mentorship have already made a significant impact in New York. He has quickly gained respect from teammates for his positive energy and mature approach, which has made him an invaluable asset to the quarterback room.

Wilson’s mentorship could be especially beneficial for Dart, who is stepping into a high-pressure role early in his career and by leaning into a guiding role, he not only strengthens team cohesion but also ensures the young quarterback receives the necessary support to succeed.

His approach mirrors other recent NFL situations, such as Kirk Cousins being named QB2 over Michael Penix in Atlanta, where the veteran accepted the decision with composure and professionalism.

Chargers vs. Giants, NFL Week 4: Start time, live stream, TV channel

The Giants face the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4, marking a pivotal early-season test. The Chargers, undefeated at 3-0 and fresh off victories within the AFC West, travel east to MetLife Stadium to face a Giants team adjusting at quarterback.

Wilson will not start, with rookie Dart taking the helm in his place as New York enters the matchup at 0-3, with the quarterback change highlighting their challenges.

This game will test Dart’s poise and the Giants’ ability to adapt while leveraging Wilson’s guidance behind the scenes.

The matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and New York Giants is scheduled for Sunday, September 28, with kickoff set for 10:00 a.m. PT. The game will be broadcast live on CBS.
