A new era has begun for the New York Giants. After the failed Daniel Jones project-who is now with the Indianapolis Colts-the Big Apple team has changed direction. Their quarterback room is completely different from past years, except for Tommy DeVito.
During the offseason, the Giants added three new quarterbacks: veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, along with the surprise first-round draft pick Jaxson Dart, after New York traded with the Houston Texans to acquire the Ole Miss quarterback.
Right after selecting Dart, Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll stated that Wilson would begin training camp as the starting quarterback-but that doesn’t guarantee he’ll be the starter in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders.
This is especially true because the Jaxson Dart project might be the last hope to save the jobs of both Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen, meaning Wilson’s time as a starter in New York could be short-lived.
Russell Wilson’s leadership is under scrutiny
After an unceremonious departure from the Seattle Seahawks-despite winning a Super Bowl with them in 2014-Russell Wilson joined the Denver Broncos, where he posted a disappointing 11-19 record over two seasons. He then moved on to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he went 6-5 as a starter and helped the team reach the playoffs.
Wilson has always maintained a positive attitude, especially on social media. However, NBC Sports analyst Chris Simms has questioned Wilson’s leadership, noting that some of his teammates haven’t spoken highly of him.
“What I know is this: his ability to lead and communicate with players falls on deaf ears,” Simms said on his podcast, as cited by Steelers Depot. “You’ve heard me say that at the end of last season… I didn’t just hear it from people I trust in Pittsburgh, you could see it on TV-he would talk to teammates on the sideline, and they would literally look away from where he was talking.”
Now, Russell Wilson will try to win the starting job, and at the moment he holds a slight advantage over the other quarterbacks. But as this report suggests, sooner than later-maybe even faster than expected-Daboll and Schoen may be forced to put Dart on the field to prove they deserve to remain in charge of the Giants for another season.
It’s possible that Wilson does start the season, especially since the first games are against the Commanders, Cowboys, Chiefs, and Chargers. If the Giants start 0-4, we might see Dart make his first start in Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints.
