Russell Wilson’s last ride? Insider says Cowboys game could be his final start

Russell Wilson’s time with the New York Giants is already hanging by a thread. After stumbling through a rough debut in Week 1 against Washington, the 35-year-old quarterback is now facing the possibility that his next start could also be his last.

Wilson looked out of sync in the opener, completing less than half of his passes with two interceptions in a 21-10 loss. Giants fans wasted no time calling for rookie Jaxson Dart to take over, and on Friday, The Athletic’s Ian O’Connor fanned the flames with a bold prediction: Wilson’s start this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys will be the final one of his career.

A career defined by highs-and a haunting low

The fall has been steep. Wilson once stood at the center of Seattle’s rise to dominance, guiding the Seahawks to a Super Bowl XLVIII title and nearly repeating the following year. But his fateful interception at the goal line in Super Bowl XLIX remains a moment he’s never escaped.

Since leaving Seattle, his stops in Denver and Pittsburgh produced more frustration than highlights. Now, his stint in New York feels like a fading encore. Over the past three seasons, he’s thrown nearly as many interceptions as touchdowns, a stat line far from his prime.

Could the Cowboys game be Wilson’s farewell?

Giants brass are reportedly ready to hand the keys to Dart if Wilson falters again. Even if he plays well, the sense is that New York views him as a short-term placeholder rather than a long-term answer. For a quarterback once known for his magic outside the pocket, the magic seems gone.

Still, there’s respect. Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who worked with Wilson in Seattle, praised him this week: “One of the greatest deep ball throwers I’ve ever been around… a great improviser,” he told reporters (Dallas Morning News).

If O’Connor’s prediction comes true, Sunday’s primetime game could double as a curtain call. Wilson, once a symbol of clutch play and creativity, may now be remembered for a career that burned bright early, but couldn’t sustain the flame.
