June 1 could be the day Bill Belichick walks away from North Carolina football with nothing more than a signature and a check for $1 million. Six months ago, the hiring of the legendary eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach was heralded as a bold new chapter for Tar Heels football.
Belichick arrived with unmatched pedigree and ambition, even bringing along his son, Stephen Belichick, to serve as defensive coordinator. At his introductory press conference, he reassured fans and media alike, declaring, “I didn’t come here to leave.”
But now, whispers have grown louder, and some of the most respected voices in sports media are suggesting there’s more to this situation than just football.
A million-dollar exit could test Belichick’s true intentions
One of the most vocal skeptics is Pablo Torre, who believes the writing has been on the wall since Belichick’s contract details were first revealed. On NFL on NBC, he and Mike Florio explored what the June 1 clause truly means.
“I don’t think people appreciate the significance of June 1. On June 1, Bill Belichick has the power to write a check for a million dollars and walk away,” Florio said on the May 27 episode.
Torre argues this isn’t just about football anymore. The saga surrounding Belichick’s relationship with Jordon Hudson, a 24-year-old former cheerleader and now reportedly his girlfriend, has brought a strange energy to the UNC campus.
Torre noted that Belichick has referred to Hudson as “brilliant,” installed her as COO of Belichick Productions, and is believed to have helped secure lucrative media opportunities for her behind the scenes.
“This was weird before Jordon Hudson became a character, one of the protagonists. It was weird based on that language alone,” Torre said. “It comes 10 times cheaper for him to pull his own parachute cord… And I think it implies very clearly that Bill Belichick wanted an escape hatch to go to the NFL.”
While Hudson’s presence has sparked controversy, UNC has officially denied claims that she’s been banned from football facilities. Still, the public speculation isn’t helping matters.
“I think there’s a chance, an absolute real chance that he doesn’t [make it to Week 1 with North Carolina],” Torre added.
