Rory McIlroy reveals game-changing business strategy inspired by Roger Federer

After 18 seasons of traveling, grinding, and winning across the biggest stages in golf, Rory McIlroy has reached a turning point. With 45 professional victories behind him, the 36-year-old now talks openly about wanting to play the events he truly cares about and focus his energy on the majors and the Ryder Cup. What sounds like a scaled-back schedule is actually something far more calculated. McIlroy is reshaping his career around a long-term business vision with TPG Sports, and the architect he keeps referencing is not a golfer at all. It’s Roger Federer.

McIlroy shared the story during a recent appearance at the CEO Council Forum. He explained that when he created his own company in 2013 with Sean O’Flaherty, the early blueprint followed the model that LeBron James and Maverick Carter pioneered.

They even spoke directly with Carter’s team to understand how it worked. But over time, McIlroy realized another athlete had done something even more aligned with the direction he wanted to take.

Federer’s approach stood out. The Swiss legend built a second career through selective appearances, smart partnerships, and a tight control of personal branding. When Nike decided not to renew his contract, Federer did not rush for a replacement. He built his own identity, signed with Uniqlo, and invested in On Running, which has since grown into a global sportswear giant.

His business moves helped elevate him into the group of billionaire athletes, a milestone widely reported by outlets such as Forbes.

20 or 18 years into a career, you don’t want to go to the same monotonous places. At the end of his career, Roger said he wanted to play in places he could never play in his career

McIlroy studied this with Federer and longtime agent Tony Godsick. He was fascinated by how setbacks could be turned into opportunity and how a carefully shaped public image could open doors far beyond competition.

A new strategy takes shape for Rory McIlroy

That influence has already reshaped the way McIlroy chooses his tournaments. He no longer wants a packed calendar. He wants meaningful appearances in markets with momentum. Earlier this year he won his first Masters while playing fewer events than at any point in his career. Watching from the gallery were Federer and Caroline Wozniacki, both cheering him on as he slipped into the green jacket.

The strategy became even clearer later that season when McIlroy traveled to Delhi for the first DP World India Championship. India is a fast-growing market for golf but still lacks the global star power that fuels the American and European circuits. By competing there, McIlroy stepped directly into a region where sponsorships and brand partnerships are expanding rapidly.

Australia offers a similar opportunity. Each time he competes in these emerging markets, his presence brings visibility and commercial value. What looks like a travel schedule is actually a business development roadmap.

McIlroy’s plan is simple: fewer tournaments, bigger global impact. Federer proved that a selective, brand-forward career can outlast even the best competitive years. Now McIlroy is following the same path, and the results are already starting to show.
