Rookie QB Cam Ward told “I ain’t giving you nothing dawg” by referee during practice

Cam Ward, the Tennessee Titans‘ highly anticipated No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, is learning that the NFL doesn’t offer special treatment-even for top draft picks.

During a recent training camp session, Ward approached a referee with a request:

“You gonna give me some calls, ref?”

The referee’s response was swift and clear:

“I ain’t giving you nothing dawg.”

This exchange, captured by microphones, underscores the reality that Ward, despite his impressive college career at Miami, must earn every call and respect in the professional league.

Cam Ward’s Transition to the NFL

Ward‘s journey to the NFL has been marked by high expectations. At Miami, he threw for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns, leading to his selection as the first overall pick.

However, his transition to the NFL has been met with cautious optimism. While he has shown flashes of brilliance during training camp, including impressive throws and leadership qualities, there have also been moments of inconsistency.

Titans coaches have acknowledged these growing pains, emphasizing that Ward’s development is a process.

Despite the challenges, Ward remains confident in his abilities. He recently stated,

“I think we honestly have the ability to be a top-10 offense. It’s on every guy in that huddle, including myself, bringing that right mindset every day.”

His optimism reflects his determination to succeed and lead the Titans to new heights.

Ward’s optimism comes against the backdrop of a struggling offense. Tennessee finished 27th in scoring last season, averaging just 18.3 points per game. Ward himself was candid about the group’s limitations earlier this preseason, describing the offense as “mid” after a rough practice last month.

Rookie learning curve and resilience

Ward and the offense seemed to rebound in Wednesday’s session. While much of the work focused on short passes to move the ball efficiently, not everything went smoothly.

During a move-the-ball drill, Ward attempted to throw the ball away, but it did not reach the sideline and was intercepted by Falcons cornerback Dee Alford, ending the day for the first-team offense.

Titans coach Brian Callahan acknowledged the challenges that come with integrating a rookie quarterback into the lineup.

Even after the interception, Ward‘s confidence remained unshaken. He repeatedly emphasized that strong communication and belief within the team will be key to achieving success.

“We all believe it,” Ward said. “The whole receiver corps, I tell those guys they’re the best. We’ve got to always have confidence in each other. At the end of the day, no matter what goes on, we’ve got to have that confidence that we will make the play.”

Ward‘s comments reflect a broader trend in the Titans’ approach to this season. With a mix of experienced players and promising talent, the team is attempting to revitalize an offense that struggled in 2024.
