Rookie Paige Bueckers leads Dallas Wings with power, but Atlanta Dream imposes its strength in the WNBA

The matchup between the Dallas Wings and the Atlanta Dream nearly became a historic chapter in the WNBA, though not for reasons Dallas fans would want to remember. With an injury list as long as a full rotation, there were fears that Paige Bueckers’ team could become only the second in league history to lose a game by forfeit. However, the rookie star showed up at the last minute to prevent it, confirming her commitment to the team.

Bueckers, returning from illness, not only played but recorded a double-double in points and assists. Despite suffering their seventh consecutive loss, the Wings showed character, closing the gap to just four points in the third quarter against an Atlanta Dream team riding a 19-6 streak. For ION commentators, Dallas’ bravery was praiseworthy, highlighting their ability to compete with only eight players available.

Paige Bueckers pushes forward despite injuries

Staying close to one of the strongest teams in the WNBA was an achievement for a Wings squad whose season has been defined by injuries. Tyasha Harris was sidelined with a knee injury, while DiJonai Carrington, Maddy Siegrest, and Bueckers herself also missed extended time. Just when Dallas seemed to be regaining some stability, Arike Ogunbowale was diagnosed with tendinitis and JJ Quinerly tore her ACL.

The effort wasn’t enough in the final stretch: Dallas entered the fourth quarter just four points behind (71-67), but collapsed, scoring only 11 points to Atlanta’s 29, falling 100-78. With the win, the Dream continue to push for top spots, while the Wings sink with 31 losses on the season, on the verge of becoming the team with the most defeats in league history.

Paige Bueckers sends a powerful message

Amid the frustration, Paige Bueckers chose to deliver a message of hope to the fans, drawing inspiration from one of her idols: Stephen Curry. She recalled a tweet from the Golden State Warriors point guard in his early years, when the team was not yet dominant, asking fans for patience: “Just stay with us… we’re going to figure it out.”

That same spirit was conveyed by the Dallas rookie, urging fans not to lose faith in the project. With a young roster, another high draft pick on the way, and Bueckers’ talent as a cornerstone, the Wings have the potential to become a dominant franchise in the coming years-if health is on their side.
