Rob Pelinka tries to convince LeBron James to stay with the Lakers with ‘championship aspirations’ signing

The Los Angeles Lakers have made a bold move this offseason to solidify their championship aspirations with the signing of center Deandre Ayton. After a few challenging months and a mix of uncertainty surrounding the roster, this acquisition has brought a sense of optimism and excitement to the Lakers’ fan base.

Ayton, a former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, is known for his size, athleticism, and ability to impact the game both offensively and defensively. At 6’11”, he played a crucial role in the Phoenix Suns’ journey to the NBA Finals in 2021.

Despite some criticisms regarding his consistency, Ayton’s potential is undeniable. His skill set fits perfectly into the Lakers’ current lineup, especially with LeBron James and Luka Doncic on the roster. Both superstars are known for their elite playmaking abilities, which could elevate Ayton’s performance, particularly in pick-and-roll situations, where he has previously thrived alongside Chris Paul in Phoenix.

Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ general manager, made it clear that securing a starting-caliber center was the team’s top priority for the offseason.

Pelinka expressed that Ayton is the ideal player to meet that need, stating, “Acquiring a starting-caliber center was the top priority for us this offseason, and we believe Deandre is an amazing solution to that objective and is an ideal player to add to our current core.”

The Lakers’ front office is banking on Ayton’s size, mobility, and playoff experience to help protect the paint and provide an additional scoring option inside.

Lakers’ title hopes depend on Ayton’s impact

Ayton’s presence on the court should enhance the Lakers’ ability to both score in the paint and protect the rim. His ability to defend against the opposing team’s big men while contributing offensively as a lob threat and an efficient scorer around the basket is exactly what the Lakers need to compete for a championship.

His past experience as a starting center on a Finals team gives him a valuable edge, and it aligns perfectly with the Lakers’ ultimate goal-winning another championship with LeBron James in the twilight of his career.

With Ayton’s signing, the Lakers have bolstered their frontcourt, but they aren’t stopping there. The team also added Jaxson Hayes, a versatile center who will provide depth behind Ayton.

Hayes’ impressive 72% shooting last season and his energy off the bench will complement Ayton’s role and contribute to a more dynamic center rotation. The Lakers are also rumored to be in talks to add another veteran center, such as Al Horford, which could further strengthen their interior defense.

As the 2025-26 season approaches, it’s clear that the Lakers are all in on competing for the NBA title. While questions about LeBron James’ future with the team remain, the Lakers’ roster is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the league.

If Ayton can tap into his full potential, alongside LeBron and Doncic, the Lakers will have a strong case as title contenders.
