Rob Gronkowski takes a step back to avoid overshadowing Tom Brady’s Patriots career: “If I were still playing…”

Continuing the trend of asking uncomfortable questions of players, former players, or even those who have just returned for a one-day contract to retire with their beloved team, journalists and content creators asked Rob Gronkowski about a topic related to Tom Brady, comparing him to, and even placing him on the same level as, the former quarterback of the New England Patriots.

Rob Gronkowski retired in 2019 after winning three Super Bowls in nine years. But it was Tom Brady who brought him back to the league when he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There, the duo won another Super Bowl. The tight end officially retired in 2022. Tom Brady had also retired that same year, but returned for one season before retiring for good in 2023. Since then, they have played different roles.

Gronkowski responds to possible statue next to Tom Brady’s

A content creator asked Gronkowski if he would also like a statue next to the 17-foot bronze GOAT outside Gillette Stadium. “Tom is one of a kind,” the legendary tight end responded on the November 12 episode of Up & Adams. “He’s the greatest of all time. He played until he was 45,” replied the man considered by many to be the greatest tight end in history.

“If I were still playing and had been with the Patriots my entire career, playing until I was 38 or 40, then yes, I would deserve a statue next to Tom’s. But Tom is one of a kind. He was here for over 20 years. I mean, the greatest. So a statue is kind of out of the question, considering the legacy that Tom Brady left us all,” Gronkowski concluded.

New England offered Rob Gronkowski a one-day contract to retire as a Patriot

New England Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski signed a one-day contract Wednesday to retire as a member of the team. Gronkowski stated, after his retirement following his time with the Patriots, that he had always wanted to return and contribute to the community, and that the park’s opening with Hurley spurred that initiative. On Monday, he described his retirement as a moment that “closes a chapter.”

“I’m a Patriot for life. My career started here and it had to end here, no question about it. It was an obvious decision to come here and retire as a member of the New England Patriots,” Gronkowski concluded. During his time in New England, Gronkowski recorded 521 receptions for 7,861 yards and scored 80 touchdowns. His 80 touchdowns rank him first all-time in Patriots history.
