Former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Rob Gronkowski has stirred up speculation about Bill Belichick‘s coaching future, suggesting that one struggling AFC South team could be on his radar. Belichick, who ended his 24-year stint with the Patriots last season, is open to new coaching possibilities, and Gronkowski suggested the Jacksonville Jaguars as a potential landing spot for the legendary coach.
Gronkowski, who played a crucial role during several of Belichick‘s championship seasons, pointed to the Jaguars’ poor start under head coach Doug Pederson. With the team sitting at 0-4 and showing little improvement, a coaching change might be on the table, and the 72-year-old Belichick could be a name to watch.
“I think coach Belichick will pick up the phone if the Jacksonville Jaguars call and they have a head coach vacancy,” Gronkowski said.
“No doubt about that. I believe that coach Belichick does believe he belongs in the coaching world. I think he’s doing a great job in the media this year, but I think he will be back in the NFL next year.
“But I feel like he will take the call, because they had Tom Kaufman in there before, who’s under the same coaching tree as Bill Belichick. And you know that tough mentality, that old school type of football, so they understand the discipline of Coach Belichick.”
Future remains uncertain
Belichick has a long history with the Jaguars, having faced them numerous times throughout his career. One of the most notable matchups came in the 2017 AFC Championship Game, where Belichick led the Patriots to a dramatic 24-20 comeback victory, a key moment that propelled New England to yet another Super Bowl appearance.
This offseason, rumors have linked Belichick to a handful of teams, and he even had discussions with the Atlanta Falcons. However, the iconic coach has taken a wait-and-see approach, opting to assess the landscape and consider his options for next year.
