In the game, that the Los Angeles Lakers lost once again. Reggie Miller, a league legend and now a television commentator, did not hold back at all when criticizing Luka Doncic for his lack of defensive commitment.
According to Miller’s assessment, Doncic was merely walking through several plays that demanded full effort to help his team avoid yet another disastrous defeat, which ultimately happened anyway.
The Lakers suffered a costly and disheartening loss against the Detroit Pistons, falling 128-106. The Los Angeles team appears to be falling apart in this first quarter of the season after starting with imposing strength that had placed them as the second-ranked franchise in the Western Conference.
Now everything seems to have collapsed for the Lakers, who cannot find their way back to the winning path. With performances like the one seen on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, Luka Doncic has not emerged in a favorable light.
Reggie Miller’s criticism of Luka Doncic
The critical moment came in the second quarter, when Doncic did absolutely nothing defensively against Jalen Duren and his offensive attack. When the replay aired moments later, Miller became even more biting and sarcastic toward the Lakers player.
Look at Luka right here. It’s OK, Luka, to move your feet a little bit over and help out. What does he do? He just throws up his hands. This would be frustrating for me.
This is not the first time Luka Doncic has been criticized for his defensive shortcomings. He is widely considered a beast on offense, but when it comes to defense, very little happens with him and the support his teammates require from his presence.
Doncic’s defensive rating sits at 115, while his steals average 1.5 and his blocks 0.6 per game. In other words, that production is almost negligible. Now that the team is in trouble, they need a much higher level of commitment from the star guard.
Still, as has been said, on the offensive end, he is a ravenous force and is on a trajectory to be considered an MVP candidate this season. His numbers, 33.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, 8.6 assists, and 46.2 percent shooting efficiency, clearly support that narrative.

Criticism came from multiple fronts. It was not only Reggie Miller, as Skip Bayless also voiced his frustration with the Slovenian star. He stated outright that the team’s 11th loss was largely Doncic’s fault.

Head coach JJ Redick has also criticized his players for not doing enough during games to overturn adverse scores and secure more victories.
The Lakers have stalled badly in recent outings, posting just one win during that stretch, a sign of performance issues that must be corrected quickly if they hope to return to the top.
