An unusual episode marked the match between Sport Huaquilla and Magdalena CEDEC in the Copa Peru. In the 82nd minute, referee Luis Alegre was preparing to send off a player when the situation got out of control from the sidelines.
A member of the coaching staff entered the field and tried to assault the referee with a plastic bottle. The reaction was immediate: the referee responded with a karate-style kick that put the assistant out of action. The match could not continue and was suspended.
What really happened in the play
The trigger was the invasion of the field by the assistant, something that already constitutes a serious offense within the regulations. The initial aggression completely changed the context of the referee’s decision, going from a routine expulsion to a major incident.
The referee’s response, however, is also under scrutiny. Although he acted after being attacked, the use of physical violence opens the door to disciplinary sanctions by the tournament authorities
What could happen now?
After what happened, the case will probably be evaluated by the corresponding disciplinary committee. Both the staff member and the referee could face consequences, as the regulations provide for sanctions for assaults on the field, regardless of who initiates them.
Beyond the viral impact of the video, the incident exposes a recurring problem in youth categories: the lack of control in the playing environment. The suspension of the match is only the first measure in a case that has yet to be resolved.
