The Los Angeles Lakers‘ recent slide has intensified scrutiny around a team still trying to define itself.

JJ Redick‘s first season on the bench has been marked by visible emotion. The new head coach has publicly challenged his players in recent games, criticizing a lack of professionalism and commitment as defeats mounted.

League observers point to unrealistic expectations as a major factor. Despite improvement from last season, the Lakers were never built to transform overnight into a dominant contender.

Zach Lowe addressed that context on his podcast, questioning the idea that this roster was ever entitled to immediate success.
“I know JJ Redick cares. It’s his job to care for 82 games,” Lowe said. “Is it okay that I just don’t care? And here’s why I just don’t care.
“None of this was ever supposed to happen. This team was never supposed to exist in this way. And once it was enabled to exist in this way by Nico Harrison, it was never entitled to be a title contender right now.”
Structural weaknesses limit the Lakers’ ceiling
Defensive problems have been persistent. The Lakers lack size, struggle to protect the rim, and do not have a dependable backup center. Their age compounds the issue, making consistent defensive intensity difficult over long stretches.
Doncic‘s offensive impact is undeniable, but his presence adds strain to an already fragile defensive setup.
At the same time, LeBron James, now 41, cannot be expected to shoulder that responsibility every night.
