The New York Giants‘ quarterback situation has undergone a complete overhaul in recent months, and it’s now attracting more than just football analysts.
With Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, Tommy DeVito, and rookie Jaxson Dart all on the roster, the Giants have assembled what one anonymous NFL coach jokingly said belongs on television.
“You need a reality show for that [quarterbacks] room,” the coach told ESPN, capturing the sentiment surrounding a group brimming with distinct personalities and contrasting trajectories.
Interestingly, the quarterback cast could have been even more unique. The Giants reportedly considered Shedeur Sanders, son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, before ultimately opting for Dart in the 2025 NFL Draft.
According to Jordan Raanan, both quarterbacks had fans within the Giants’ decision-making group, but Dart emerged as the more prepared candidate.
Sanders reportedly struggled during key Giants visit
Sources familiar with the Giants’ pre-draft evaluation revealed that Sanders’ March visit to the facility may have been a turning point.
Head coach Brian Daboll had given Sanders a play install the night before his visit and then grilled him on the material the next day.
Multiple league insiders believe that Sanders’ performance during that session fell short of expectations.
Following that meeting, it became clear that enthusiasm for Sanders was waning within the organization.
Weeks later, insiders confirmed to ESPN that some within the Giants camp felt “lukewarm” about Sanders. “He was Daboll’s quarterback of choice,” a source said about Dart, noting that momentum shifted clearly in the Ole Miss product’s direction as the draft approached.
After being drafted, Giants GM Joe Schoen spoke to Dart on the phone and told him, “Dominated the entire process with us.” That comment echoed the sentiment that Dart’s preparation and execution during interviews won over key figures in the building.
This wasn’t the only quarterback path the Giants explored. Reports indicated that Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, and Kirk Cousins were all considered at various points this offseason.
They even looked into trading up for top pick Cam Ward, but none of those options came to fruition.
Now, the team is putting its faith in a room that includes a seven-time Pro Bowl veteran in Wilson, a Heisman winner in Winston, a fan-favorite in DeVito, and a promising rookie in Dart.
While some may find humor in the unusual assembly of talent and storylines, the Giants are betting that this unconventional mix might just be what the franchise needs to climb out of its recent struggles.
