Marcelo will be remembered for his great technique and remarkable partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo. That level of chemistry, evident in their seamless one-touch passes and overlapping runs, is rare. The Brazilian made numerous impactful plays, including crucial assists and defensive contributions, and helped Real Madrid lift five Champions League trophies in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022, a remarkable feat in any sport. Their partnership was a key factor in Real Madrid’s dominance during that era.

This blind first touch, a masterclass in control, demonstrates he was not ready to retire, and as a huge fan, I implore Marcelo to come out of retirement. We miss your smile and your passion for the game, both of which brought joy to countless fans. We witnessed such touches of brilliance throughout his career, moments that highlighted his exceptional talent and love for the sport. His retirement leaves a void in the football world.

Before having a huge career with Real Madrid, he debuted with one of Brazil’s most important clubs in their history during the 2005-06 season. Subsequently, the Brazilian left-back spent 16 years in Spain, during which he won 24 official trophies:

  • 5 Champions League titles: 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022
  • 4 FIFA Club World Cup titles: 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018
  • 2 UEFA Super Cup titles:2016, 2017
  • 6 La Liga titles: 2007, 2008, 2012, 2017, 2020, 2022
  • 2 Copa del Rey titles: 2011, 2014
  • 5 Supercopa de España titles: 2008, 2012, 2017, 2020, 2022.

After that, he spent a season in Greece with Olympiacos, where he only spent nearly a year, contributing solid performances but ultimately feeling the pull of home. He finally returned to Fluminense, the club of his heart, fulfilling a lifelong dream and igniting a wave of excitement among the fans.

Having won every major honor and solidified his place as one of the best in history, Marcelo returned to bring joy to his fans. Fluminense won their first Copa Libertadores title in club history, a feat long yearned for by the club and its supporters. Marcelo’s leadership and experience proved crucial in the final, contributing to a memorable victory. He delivered the most joyous moment in the club’s history, sparking celebrations that resonated throughout the city.

Sadly, his Fluminense stay did not end well. Prior to the matchday 32 game against Grêmio in the 2024 season, Marcelo had a heated discussion with the coach regarding his playing time. Coach Mano Menezes disapproved of his attitude and decided to bench him and substitute Kennedy.

The following morning, Marcelo, feeling disheartened by the situation, announced his retirement from professional football, leaving fans surprised and saddened. The club released a statement thanking Marcelo for his contributions, while many fans expressed their disappointment with the coach’s decision.
