Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta’s reputation is damaged after cutting Maxx Crosby and being labeled “dishonest”

The Ravens have found themselves at the center of controversy after a dramatic collapse of a major trade involving star pass rusher Maxx Crosby.

The deal, which would have sent the Raiders standout to Baltimore, appeared to be finalized before suddenly falling apart, leaving critics around the league questioning the actions of general manager Eric DeCosta.

The proposed agreement reportedly involved Baltimore sending two first round draft picks in exchange for Crosby. However, the move was canceled after the player underwent a physical examination with the Ravens.

Medical concerns tied to a recent knee surgery raised doubts during the evaluation, ultimately leading the team to withdraw from the trade. The decision immediately sparked debate throughout the NFL, particularly because the transaction had already been widely reported as agreed upon.

As the situation unfolded, criticism of DeCosta and the Ravens grew louder.

NFL criticism emerges after sudden trade reversal

The abrupt cancellation created frustration across the league, especially among executives who believed the process had been mishandled.

One anonymous general manager reportedly did not hold back when describing the situation: “This is very much bulls**-t on Baltimore’s part.”

The comment reflected the broader feeling that the Ravens had altered the course of the market after other teams had already moved forward with their own offseason plans.

For the Raiders, the reversal also created uncertainty around the future of Crosby, a five time Pro Bowl defensive end widely regarded as one of the league’s most disruptive pass rushers. The expectation had been that he would become a key addition to Baltimore’s defense before the deal unexpectedly unraveled.

DeCosta expresses regret but stands by decision

Despite the criticism, DeCosta insisted the organization acted in the best interest of the franchise. Speaking after the trade collapsed, he admitted the situation was deeply disappointing for him personally.

“Nobody’s more upset about this than me,” he said. “Gutted by it, actually.”

While the Ravens ultimately walked away from the agreement, the team quickly shifted direction by signing pass rusher Hendrickson to strengthen the defense.

According to DeCosta, the original plan had actually been to add both players rather than replace one with the other. Still, the timing of Baltimore’s decision has left lingering questions across the NFL.

For now, Crosby remains with the Raiders, and the fallout from the failed trade continues to shape the conversation around the reputation of DeCosta and the decision making inside the Ravens front office.
