Randy Moss reflects on cancer journey and looks ahead to triumphant TV return

Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Mossis set to make a full-time comeback to television after confronting a private and intense battle with cancer.

The legendary wide receiver, who first disclosed his health struggles late last year, has quietly completed treatment and is now preparing to resume his role as an analyst on ESPN‘s flagship NFL pregame show.

In December 2024, Moss removed his sunglasses during a Sunday NFL Countdown segment and shared that he was “battling something internally.”

Just days later, ESPN confirmed he’d step away indefinitely for medical care.

True to his character, Moss remained determined: “My goal is to get back on that television with my team,” he declared in an Instagram upload.

A cancerous mass, located in his bile duct between the liver and pancreas, was identified shortly afterward.

Moss underwent a complex Whipple procedure, followed by radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Despite the grueling regimen, he persevered.

“Your boy is a cancer survivor,” he said, emphasizing the severity of his struggle and his commitment to return.

Moss took a brief hiatus, around two months, from broadcasting during which he endured surgery, treatment, and recovery.

But in February, ESPN invited him back for a surprise Super Bowl broadcast appearance. A tribute video featuring heartfelt messages from legends like Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Kevin Garnett, and Justin Jefferson moved him to tears.

He admitted, “You already know it’s the big crybaby here,” visibly emotional as he wiped his eyes, adding, “I couldn’t do it alone … I got a lot of love and a lot of people believe in me, man, so I’m happy to be here.”

Path to recovery and return

Since the diagnosis, Moss credits a strong support network, including doctors, family, and fans, for sustaining him through the ordeal.

Radiant in a “Team Moss” sweatshirt emblazoned with a cancer ribbon and the phrase “Let’s Moss cancer,” Moss has made public appearances, such as an onset guest spot with NBC6 Miami’s Sara Cardona.

Cardona was quick to share the news on social media: “Had a special guest join me in studio today!… It was so great getting to interview Randy Moss!”

His physical resilience impressed fans. Observers noticed how healthy he looked and how much his spirit had lifted.

That moment, combined with his emotional return during the Super Bowl, solidified the sentiment at ESPN:

“Randy‘s return on Super Bowl Sunday was an emotional lift-not just for our team but for the entire football community-and knowing he will resume his full Sunday NFL Countdown schedule… has been the highlight of the offseason,” the network’s statement to The Athletic read.

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, kicking off the regular campaign in early September, Moss prepares to resume his role alongside longtime colleagues such as Mike Greenberg, Tedy Bruschi, Alex “Trebek” Smith, and even Rex Ryan (who Moss teasingly said he “really didn’t miss much” during his absence).
