Rachel DeMita forced to leave basketball league after defending Caitlin Clark

Rachel DeMita has confirmed she parted ways with her role as a courtside reporter for the Big3 basketball league after making public posts in support of the Indiana Fever guard, Caitlin Clark.

DeMita’s social media activity promoting the WNBA star during a Big3 broadcast was considered the “final straw” by the league’s leadership of the three-on-three basketball league co-founded by Ice Cube in 2017.

Despite her brief tenure, having only joined in June 2024, the 35-year-old quickly became a visible figure in the league’s coverage. However, her affinity for Clark, a leading figure in the WNBA, appears to have created friction with Big3’s executive expectations.

The breaking point came on Saturday night on June 14, DeMita shared a highlight of Clark on her social media account featuring the talented 23-year-old sinking a long-range three-pointer.

“For those who questioned the hype,” Rachel captioned the post whilst working for the Big3 at the time, which caused tension as she was viewed to have promoted a rival operation in the form of the WNBA.

In addition to that post, DeMita had previously expressed her admiration for Clark, sharing a photo of herself wearing Clark’s No. 22 Fever jersey at a game on May 3 to over a million followers, deepening a divide between her and executives.

While the Big3 league did not officially comment on her departure, sources cited by Front Office Sports confirmed that her public promotion of WNBA content while representing the Big3 was central to the decision.

Could Caitin Clark quit the WNBA?

Clark remains a focal point of women’s basketball and recently reignited debate during a clash with the Connecticut Sun as she was hit in the eye by Jacy Sheldon, after which Marina Mabrey forcefully shoved her to the ground.

The altercation drew widespread criticism online – particularly because Mabrey was not ejected, although it was later upgraded from technical to flagrant, which would have earned an ejection.

Clark’s teammate Sophie Cunningham was fined for a separate hard foul on Sheldon in the final moments of the game, which led to a larger scuffle and multiple players being tossed out.

Known for her elite shooting range and leadership, Caitlin is often the target of physical defense and aggressive fouls and the recent incident has only reignited discussion about if she is afforded enough protection – and if she should remain within the WNBA at all.

One fan wrote on social media, “Caitlin Clark needs to leave the WNBA as soon as she can. The league is actively trying to injure her. Their hatred for her is incredibly obvious. This is insane. She is bigger than the league.”

A second said, “I’m starting to think Caitlin Clark should just leave the WNBA and start her own new pro league. May sound crazy. But if I could buy stock in Caitlin or the rest of the WNBA without her, I’m buying Caitlin Clark stock over the entire WNBA combined without her.”

And a third commented, “A third fan commented, “Caitlin Clark should leave the league. Join whatever other league there is out there and say (expletive) you to the WNBA. No one cares about this league. They only tune in to watch Clark and they will do they where she plays.”
