Former Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers is undoubtedly one of the most talked-about prospects, both for his college career and for competing with Arch Manning last season at Texas.
Ewers was a five-star prospect coming out of high school, arriving in the NCAA with high expectations. From the moment he joined the Longhorns, he showcased flashes of talent, fueling talk of yet another elite quarterback produced by the state of Texas.
However, injuries began to take a toll in 2023, when he missed time due to a joint sprain. In 2024, given the immense talent in last year’s quarterback class, Ewers decided to return to Texas for another season-a decision that, in hindsight, may have backfired.
2024: The year that may have hurt Ewers’ stock
In addition to competing with Arch Manning, Ewers had an inconsistent 2024 season. Despite the hype surrounding Manning, Ewers started the season as the Longhorns’ QB1. But as the year went on, injuries began to affect him.
After his 2023 injury, 2024 brought further setbacks that hindered his mobility. In Week 3, he suffered an oblique injury and didn’t return until Week 7. However, based on his on-field performances, he never seemed to fully recover. His return may have been rushed, and from that point on, his play was marred by inconsistency and forgettable performances.
Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus noted that injuries have deprived Ewers of reaching his full potential:
“There was a point early in the year when I thought his trajectory was trending upward (Week 2 against Michigan). Then he got hurt again and tried to play through it, and his game became far more inconsistent. He was never the same. Look, maybe he was never going to get there, even without the injury. But that was something I was keeping an eye on,” Palazzolo explained.
Ewers praised by the Pittsburgh Steelers
Palazzolo also pointed out that Ewers’ deep passing ability leaves much to be desired, which is concerning given how essential that skill is for success in the NFL. Despite this, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has publicly stated that the team is open to the possibility of selecting Ewers in the upcoming Draft.
