The elimination of Pumas UNAM from the 2025 Leagues Cup was not the only concern for the club, as hours before the match against Inter Miami, Colombian player Alvaro Angulo received death threats via email and personal phone. This was confirmed by Efrain Juarez, the team’s head coach, in the press conference after the match in Florida.
“We have a case of one of my players, Alvaro Angulo, he received death threats in his mail and phone. I don’t know where from. It seems to come from Argentina. They are death threats. I want you to understand that,” said the coach, visibly upset by the situation. According to his words, the message would have arrived in the morning, prior to the match, which generated a tense atmosphere in the dressing room.

Despite the situation, Angulo was a starter in the match against the American team and remained on the field until the final minutes. Juarez praised the player’s commitment in an emotionally tense moment, and stressed that the club is already working to clarify the origin of the threats.

It should be noted that Angulo recently joined the university team from Independiente de Avellaneda, a club with which he had differences over alleged debts.

The university club has already started an internal investigation into the threats and hopes that the relevant authorities will act accordingly.
