Being a good boxer is a prerequisite for facing a revalued Jake Paul, but this statement by Eddie Hearn to iFL TV has nuances, as the promoter believes that the YouTuber should choose a figure who, in addition to that virtue, is a magnet for dollars, something that would guarantee the fashionable character not to lose money if in the ring – as is expected – he does not measure up. Here, boxing is the least talked about and business is the most talked about.
This reasoning is the basis for the Matchroom Boxing owner’s claim that if the challenge is serious and followed through, an eventual fight between Paul and Canelo Alvarez is not only possible, but economically feasible, which today seems to matter more than what is decided in the ring: sporting honour and love of boxing.
“Canelo wouldn’t think twice”
Eddie Hearn claimed that Canelo would fight the YouTuber and would not think twice about it once a formal offer is made: “In my opinion Canelo would take the fight (…) Why wouldn’t he? I don’t think he would think twice about it. But unless the amount of money gets out of control, I’m not sure Jake wants to fight him, yet,” he said.
From Hearn’s perspective, and for obvious reasons, Jake Paul should not look for a boxer who can easily defeat him, and that his eventual opponent should be a good pugilist who also balances with a name that his corner can sell, that is a perfectly measured balance so as not to lose in the business, win or lose in the ring.
Jake Paul: everything to prove
If it’s Canelo, the money at stake must be a lot for Jake Paul to want to get into a ring with him, knowing that he is going to lose and in an ugly way, while selling the idea that the YouTuber is finally ready to be taken into account in the boxing world, something that of course he has not achieved, not even beating a diminished Mike Tyson on November 15 in Arlington, Texas.
“Jake Paul and his team are not idiots, and they know that it makes no sense for him to fight a decent top 15 guy that he can’t beat, or who he might lose to for little money, so he just has to get the right mix of who the next opponent will be,” concluded Eddie Hearn.
