Problems begin between CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens; the Dallas Cowboys fall to the Carolina Panthers

Despite another strong performance from Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys’ passing offense, Brian Schottenheimer’s team couldn’t stop Bryce Young, falling 30-27 to the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. The loss dropped the Cowboys to 2-3-1, putting their future in the NFC East in jeopardy.

It’s clear why the Cowboys’ defense ranks among the worst in the NFL – they were completely exposed both through the air and on the ground. Carolina running back Rico Dowdle exploded for 183 rushing yards, 239 total yards, and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Bryce Young threw for 199 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception, effectively dismantling Dallas’ defensive unit.

On the Cowboys’ side, Dak Prescott, despite the team’s disappointing record, continues to play at a high level. He threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns, matching Young’s output. However, Dallas’ rushing attack was once again non-existent – limited to just 31 total yards, a difference that ultimately decided the game.

George Pickens keeps silencing critics

There’s no doubt that George Pickens has been a perfect fit for the Dallas Cowboys. Finding a reliable WR2 was a major need during the offseason. While many expected the Cowboys to address that in the NFL Draft, they instead filled the void by trading with the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire Pickens.

Pickens had always shown flashes of brilliance in Pittsburgh, but his relationship with head coach Mike Tomlin had reportedly soured. With a new contract year approaching, a change of scenery was exactly what he needed – and in Dallas, he’s thriving. Through six games, he’s recorded 32 receptions, 525 yards, and six touchdowns.

Most impressively, since CeeDee Lamb suffered an injury in Week 3, Pickens has stepped up as the team’s primary receiver. In the three games Lamb has missed, the former Steelers wideout has racked up 19 receptions, 354 yards, and four touchdowns – simply outstanding.

Looking ahead, the Cowboys could use the franchise tag to retain Pickens for another year. The projected 2026 franchise tag value for wide receivers is around $28 million, which would make him one of the highest-paid players at his position if no long-term deal is reached.
