The Pro Football Hall of Fame is the ultimate destination for the game’s greatest players, coaches, and contributors. The selection process is a meticulous one, overseen by a dedicated committee of media representatives and experts.

The Selection Committee, consisting of 33 members, is tasked with the vital responsibility of ensuring that only the finest individuals are enshrined in the Hall of Fame. As the PFHOF text states, “Charged with the vital task of continuing to be sure that new enshrinees are the finest the game has produced is the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee.”

The committee is geographically diverse, with one representative from each pro football city and two from New York, where the NFL has two teams. Additionally, there is a representative from the Pro Football Writers of America, as well as up to 17 at-large delegates.

The selection process is an annual event, taking place shortly before the Super Bowl. The committee has the flexibility to elect between four and nine new members each year, with the 1973 and 1976 classes of three being the smallest. The Selection Committee meets annually, shortly before the Super Bowl, to elect new members. There is no set number for any class of enshrinees, but the Committee’s current bylaws stipulate that between four and nine new members will be selected each year.

Importantly, every candidate is thoroughly scrutinized, and they must receive at least 80% approval from the committee to be elected. Every candidate is carefully scrutinized and must receive at least 80% approval of the Committee at the annual meeting before he or she can be elected.

To ensure that older players are considered, the Seniors Committee, made up of 12 members of the overall Selection Committee, will choose up to three nominees who played no more recently than the 1998 season to be included on the final list.

In 2022, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Board of Trustees approved a bylaws change to the selection process, allowing for the inclusion of a “Contributor” category. This category is defined as an individual who has “made outstanding contributions to professional football in capacities other than playing or coaching.”

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s selection process is a testament to the game’s rich history and the unwavering commitment to honoring its greatest legends. The meticulous approach ensures that only the most deserving individuals are enshrined, solidifying their place in the annals of football history.
