Prince William has once again made headlines, but this time not for his royal duties.

The world of soccer is in mourning. Diogo Jota, a player for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, died at the age of 28 in a car accident in Zamora, Spain.

His younger brother, André, 25, also a professional soccer player for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division, also died.

According to various sources, the accident occurred at kilometer 65 of the A-52, heading towards Benavente, near the Zamora region of Sanabria. According to reports, one of the tires on the Lamborghini Huracán they were driving blew out, causing the car to veer off the road, hit the median barrier, and catch fire.

This news comes as a shock, and messages of mourning on social media have been swift. Celebrities, teams, and sports figures sent their condolences to the families of the soccer players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo’s teammate in Portugal since 2019, and Lionel Messi.

Fans and sports lovers also expressed their grief, including Prince William. Known for his fanaticism for Aston Villa, in this painful moment that knows no rivalries, the color of his jersey took a back seat.

Through the official X account of The Prince and Princess of Wales, the heir to the British throne paid tribute and wrote with emotion:

“As part of the footballing family, I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Diogo Jota and his brother. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him @LFC @Wolves. W“

Diogo Jota’s soccer career

In 2020, he was transferred from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Liverpool, the team he played for. And he was living a dream life.

In May of this year, he won the Premier League with The Reds. Last month, he lifted the Nations League trophy with the Portuguese national team.

In addition, he had also achieved everything personally: ten days ago, on June 22, he married the mother of his three children, Rute Cardoso. Diogo was the father of Denis (2021), Duarte (2023), and a girl born in 2024 whose name has not been disclosed.

Without a doubt, this is a devastating loss that has brought tears to the world of soccer and its fans.
