Pressure piles on JJ Redick to back Bronny James on the Lakers following his strong performance

The last 24 hours have marked a significant moment for Bronny James, who has garnered attention both for a historic on-court achievement and for his remarkable performance in the G League.

On Friday, he recorded the first father-son assist in NBA history, connecting on a three-pointer from LeBron James.

Building on that milestone, Bronny followed with a career-best showing for the South Bay Lakers, prompting renewed calls for JJ Redick to provide him with a more substantial role on the Los Angeles Lakers roster.

Although Bronny has previously seen limited playing time, his recent efforts have emphasized his readiness for increased responsibility.

Prior to this week, he had only participated in sporadic minutes for the Lakers, totaling four minutes against the Brooklyn Nets and 13 minutes against the Indiana Pacers.

His last appearance exceeding ten minutes occurred on February 10, when he made a viral defensive stop against MVP candidate Victor Wembanyama. Despite these limited NBA minutes, his G League performance has demonstrated consistency and skill.

Saturday’s display was particularly compelling: 26 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, with efficient shooting at 9-of-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from three-point range.

Bronny contributed 11 points in the fourth quarter, helping South Bay secure a victory that extended their undefeated streak to 14-0 in games featuring him.

Fans have been vocal in demanding more substantial NBA minutes for the young guard, with one tweeting, “JJ Redick will see Bronny James going off, and still decide to give him garbage mins,” highlighting widespread frustration.

Others have suggested mirroring the minutes of teammate Ta’Quan Laravia, citing Bronny’s superior shooting efficiency.

Locker room support and professional development

Support for Bronny extends beyond the fanbase. Austin Reaves, a teammate, praised the guard’s dedication and improvement: “He’s just gotten better every single day. He don’t [do] no shortcuts. He loves working, does the right things, keeps his head down, don’t care about all the noise.”

Head coach JJ Redick also acknowledged Bronny’s progress, stating, “It’s gotten significantly better. Our staff has a lot of confidence in him. Felt like this was a game we really needed him.”

Despite such endorsements, Bronny’s minutes remained limited, appearing on the court for only four and a half minutes following the Pacers game.

The contrast between Bronny’s efficiency and the playing time of others has only amplified calls for increased rotation opportunities.

While Laravia has received consistent minutes, his three-point shooting remains at 31 percent, compared with Bronny’s 41 percent from deep in the G League.

This statistical advantage underscores the potential contribution Bronny could make in expanding the Lakers’ offensive versatility and spacing.

As the Lakers progress through the season, both fan sentiment and team performance metrics suggest that giving Bronny James a more consistent role may be warranted.

The combination of demonstrated skill, composure under pressure, and strong support from teammates places JJ Redick at the center of a critical decision regarding the young guard’s integration into the rotation.
