The Philadelphia Eagles absolutely dominated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana., with the final score being 40-22.
The Eagles brought a vaunted defense that was flirting with statistical history. That sack-hungry unit never took down superstar Patrick Mahomes even once in Super Bowl LVII. That was a total different story this Sunday.
Philadelphia shut down the Chiefs offense in the first half and affected Mahomes enough to force turnovers and fry his mental processing, creating a clear advantage while racking up six sacks along the way. According to NFL’s analysts, this one can be explained by the battle on the trenches, which made all the difference in this rematch.
Fans blame the Chiefs loss on a handshake
The back-to-back NFL champions’ fanbase had a couple of things to say about what went wrong with the Kansas City Chiefs and their star players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones, whom could not be a factor during Super Bowl LIX.
One of the explanations that some fans are finding like a reasonable one was a handshake that happened before the game even started and involves the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and one of the Chiefs‘ captains, defensive standout Chris Jones.
As the Commander-in-chief was heading down the field and greeting people that were on the sidelines, Jones took the chance to say hello to Trump. At first the president did not noticed that the Kansas City player wanted to greet him, but he turned around and shook hands with the defensive juggernaut.
“KC just got the Cheetos jinx.” a fan posted on X. “That’s where it all fell apart for my Chiefs.” published another social media user. “And now he’s losing.” added another person. “This aged even more poorly than usual.” stated somebody else.
Chris Jones suffered an apparent knee injury in the third quarter of the Super Bowl LIX. He was rushing the passer when he pulled up lame. He tried to jog off the field but ultimately fell to the ground, seeking medical attention. Jones appeared to be fiddling with a brace on his right knee and then he was shown being tended to by medical staff. He eventually came back into the game.
The Eagles prevent an historic event
The Philadelphia Eagles had the more talented roster, but Kansas City’s history of success and the existence of quarterback Patrick Mahomes required everyone take them seriously. The Chiefs rode the wave of having a chance to become the first team to three-peat in NFL history all the way to New Orleans.
In the end, the talent difference won out for the opposition. Because of the presence of some highly paid stalwarts (Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, Jawaan Taylor, Joe Thuney), Kansas City has been forced to cut corners with their roster.
The Chiefs tried to address left tackle with a combination of a rookie and a veteran, and both struggled so mightily, they ended up sliding an elite guard in Thuney out to tackle just to settle the group. That weakness — plus an inability to generate pressure without blitzing, and their reliance on a cobbled-together receiving corps — ended up being the obvious difference.
