Pope Leo XIV, a huge White Sox fan, gets into a heated exchange with a Cubs fan

Pope Leo XIV, who was born in Chicago, has never hidden his love for MLB, especially the Chicago White Sox.

He has been seen on numerous occasions showing his support, such as wearing a team cap during a public appearance in St. Peter’s Square or joining in the chant of “White Sox” as he was cheered. This time, the pope had a funny exchange with a Cubs fan and stole the show (and the laughs).

The pope’s unusual response to a fan

As Leo XIV made his way to the Vatican, thousands of believers waited for the Supreme Pontiff to greet him and share a moment with him.

However, as he was being led through the crowd, one of the people present wanted to play a joke on him by shouting “Go Cubs!“, knowing that he is a loyal White Sox fan.

The most surprising thing was Pope Leo XIV’s response: “Han perdido!” he said first in Spanish, adding “They lost!” The pope was referring to the fact that the Cubs, despite qualifying for the playoffs, reached the second round of the playoffs and fell to the Milwaukee Brewers.

However, the White Sox did not have a great season either. They finished fifth in the American League Central Division with a record of 60-102.

And even though he became Pope on May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis, Leon did not hesitate to be “present” during a game in June, sending a video message to fans just one month after his appointment as Pope.

Meanwhile, the team has embraced that fanaticism, honoring him with a mural and immortalizing his attendance at Rate Field Stadium in the 2005 World Series.
