Authorities in Slovenia briefly investigated an incident involving Luka Doncic after a disagreement with his partner Anamaria Goltes during a sensitive custody dispute concerning their two young daughters.
The situation unfolded only months after the birth of the couple’s second child, a moment that should have marked a family celebration, yet instead it coincided with a breakdown in their long-term relationship.
According to reports, tensions escalated while Luka Doncic was visiting Slovenia during the birth of his youngest daughter, after he missed games for the Los Angeles Lakers to be present.
During that visit, the NBA star reportedly suggested bringing his older daughter, Gabriela, back with him to the United States, a proposal that triggered a disagreement with Anamaria Goltes and ultimately led to police being contacted.
Officers later arrived at the maternity hospital in the city of Kranj, where they interviewed Anamaria Goltes, while authorities also questioned Luka Doncic separately at his residence as part of the routine investigation.
However the inquiry ended quickly, because according to the official police report investigators “did not detect any elements of a criminal offense or misdemeanor,” meaning the situation never escalated into charges.
Despite the calm conclusion to the investigation, the episode marked a turning point in the relationship, which had lasted nearly a decade and had once appeared headed toward marriage.
After returning to the United States, Luka Doncic reportedly had no further contact with Anamaria Goltes or their daughters, a development that ultimately contributed to the couple deciding to end their engagement.
In a statement addressing the situation, the basketball star emphasized that his priority remains the wellbeing of his children, even as the custody dispute continues.
“I love my daughters more than anything,” Luka Doncic said. “And I’ve been doing everything I can for them to be with me in the U.S. during the season, but that hasn’t been possible, so I recently made the tough decision to end my engagement.
“Everything I do is for my daughters’ happiness, and I will always fight to be with them and give them the best life I can.”
Doncic and Goltes drama intensifies
Shortly after Luka Doncic made his comments, the legal situation became more complicated when Anamaria Goltes filed a petition seeking child support payments and coverage of attorney fees related to the case.
Reports indicated the NBA star had been unaware of the filing before it became public, although people close to him insist he has consistently supported his family financially.
Sources connected to Luka Doncic say he covers the children’s expenses fully, and therefore dispute the implication that financial responsibilities have been neglected during the separation.
The Los Angeles Lakers guard has also taken legal steps of his own, filing an interim request in Slovenian court seeking immediate contact with daughters Gabriela and Olivia as the dispute unfolds.
Luka Doncic‘s desire for custody involvement reportedly stems from last year, when his demanding NBA schedule allowed him to spend only a few months with his eldest child.
The couple’s relationship began in 2016, eventually leading to an engagement in 2023 and the birth of their daughters Gabriela and Olivia during the following years.
While Gabriela was born in the United States, Olivia arrived in Slovenia, where Anamaria Goltes had returned after struggling with homesickness while living abroad.
Public attention intensified when Anamaria Goltes quietly removed photos of Luka Doncic from her social media accounts, prompting speculation among fans that their relationship had deteriorated.
Despite the off-court turmoil, Luka Doncic continues to perform for the Los Angeles Lakers, recently delivering a triple-double performance while leading the team to a victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 10.
