It seems as though Aaron Rodgers will be back in the NFL for the 2025/26 season as the Super Bowl-winning quarterback is poised to link up with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Acrisure Stadium.
The 41-year-old has been without a team since departing the New York Jets in February 2025 after an underwhelming spell at the MetLife Stadium, despite being partnered up with Davante Adams.
Considering his age, form and injury history, questions were asked about whether he would continue in football at all or if he would finally bow out of the NFL for good, but Mike Florio reports he is not prepared to throw the towel in yet.
The Pro Football Talk reporter said a move to the Steelers “will happen”, and this was seemingly been backed up by Art Rooney II on Friday, April 25 as he said the links are true.
“He does want to come here. So I do think we may get word soon,” Rooney, franchise owner said to Steelers Nation Radio of the prospective partnership with Rodgers for 2025/26.
Based on that, the only things left to do are to figure out an agreeable contract for the pair and a date to bring the QB through the doors of the Acrisure as Rodgers seems ready to become Russell Wilson‘s replacement.
The move spells bad news for the likes of Quinn Ewers and Shedeur Sanders, who are yet to be picked in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Steelers were one of a handful of organizations who actually needed a quarterback, but that avenue now seems closed.
As things stand, both the Texas Longhorns and Colorado Buffaloes alumni are set to become back-ups in their bids to kick-off their careers with options such as the New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints off the table.
Why did Aaron Rodgers leave the New York Jets?
Rodgers‘ split from the Jets was far from unsurprising considering the tension between the player and the front office, which potentially resulted in Robert Saleh being fired as head coach.
Now their partnership is at an end as New York cuts ties with the ex-Green Bay Packers star, after the team informed him they were moving in a different direction at quarterback.
The Jets are now under new general manager in Darren Mougey and a new head coach in Aaron Glenn, and are keen to put their own stamp on the franchise away from influential personalities.
Adams has also left to join the Los Angeles Rams, despite only joining the Jets in October 2024 after requesting a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders. He was released by New York.
