A Shocking Fight Incident Caught on Video
Video from the game shows a Pirates usher getting into a heated exchange with a fan that quickly escalated into violence. The usher, who reportedly stepped in to defend a female co-worker who was being verbally harassed by the fan and his companion at a concession stand, threw punches and even took off his belt to whip the fan after the fan spat on him. The altercation has added to the Pirates’ woes at PNC Park, coming just a week after another troubling incident in which a 20-year-old intoxicated and underage fan fell from the stands onto the field and suffered a fractured skull.
The usher involved in the fight was suspended, with reports confirming he acted to protect his colleague, though his methods were widely criticized. The Pirates now face back-to-back public relations challenges as they work to ensure fan safety and staff conduct. As for the Pirates current season (12-26), it is as bad as the events that happen in their stadium. They’re in last place in the NL Central, with only the Rockies and White Sox winning fewer games than them. So that might have something to do with the frustration of the fans.
Pirates Respond and Investigate
In an official statement, the Pittsburgh Pirates acknowledged the incident, saying, “We are aware of the unfortunate incident that occurred after the conclusion of last night’s game involving a PNC Park employee and a guest. The employee’s behavior was completely unacceptable and he was immediately suspended. The team is reviewing security footage to fully understand the circumstances and determine accountability. While the usher’s suspension was swift, some argue that if he was indeed defending a co-worker from harassment, his dismissal may have been overly harsh.
The situation raises questions about how to balance protecting employees from abusive behavior while ensuring that responses remain professional, and the Pirates will need to address this internally to clarify the usher’s intentions and the appropriate course of action.
