Pirates go for Japanese infielder and shake up MLB’s winter market

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to show signs that they want to be protagonists in the MLB offseason. Their latest target is Kazuma Okamoto, a 29-year-old Japanese infielder who could become one of the most important signings in the club’s recent history as they look to surround their jewel, Paul Skenes, with talent to convince him to stay in Pittsburgh.

Where will Okamoto play next season?

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have held multiple virtual meetings with Kazuma Okamoto, confirming that the interest goes beyond simple inquiries and places the Pirates as one of the teams attentive to the future of the Japanese slugger.

Okamoto has a 45-day signing window, which closes on January 4, so his decision must come soon. This adds pressure on both the player and the teams interested, in a market that could still move depending on other stars available.

Okamoto could sign historic contract with Pirates

One of the main obstacles for the Pirates is the financial aspect. Okamoto would be projected to sign a contract close to four years and $64 million, a figure that would surpass the largest contract in club history, signed by Francisco Liriano in 2014.

However, this winter has shown a change in mentality. The board, led by owner Robert Nutting, has been willing to explore significant contracts, such as the offer that would have been around $120 million for Kyle Schwarber.

The influence of Alex Bregman

The market for Okamoto also depends on what happens with Alex Bregman, one of the most coveted names in free agency. Teams such as the Red Sox and Blue Jays have been mentioned as potential suitors for the Japanese player, but their final decisions could wait until other key renewals are finalized.

In the case of Boston, the arrival of Willson Contreras and the possible priority for Bregman seem to momentarily distance them from Okamoto, which could benefit Pittsburgh if they remain consistent in negotiations.

Recent Pirates moves

The Pirates have not been quiet this offseason. Their most significant move was the acquisition of Brandon Lowe in a three-team trade, immediately strengthening their lineup. They also added young talent such as Jhostynxon Garcia, betting on a balance between present and future.

The management has been clear in its objective: to find a proven bat to boost offensive production. Although Okamoto has no experience in MLB, his track record in Japan supports his potential impact.

With more than 240 home runs in his career in the Japanese league and a consistent offensive profile, Kazuma Okamoto represents an ambitious bet for Pittsburgh. His arrival would not only reinforce the lineup, but would also send a clear message to the fans: the Pirates want to compete.
