Pilar Sanders reacts to Shedeur Sanders’ starting position with a message that has the support of Drake and Kanye West

Shedeur Sanders will walk into his first NFL start with more than just the Cleveland Browns‘ offense on his shoulders.

He will also take the field with a loud and very public show of support from his mother, Pilar Sanders, who sent a direct message to his critics after he was named the starter for Week 12 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

On Wednesday, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Sanders would be under center, with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel still in concussion protocol following Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

The announcement marked a significant moment for Sanders, who has spent most of his rookie season watching from the sideline and working behind veterans on the depth chart.

It did not take long for his mother to weigh in. Pilar reposted the Browns‘ graphic announcing her son as the Week 12 starter on her Instagram story and chose a pointed soundtrack to go with it.

She set the post to Drake‘s “Glow” featuring Kanye West, zeroing in on a specific section of the track: “We so certified, we so certifi-i-ied F**k you haters still, that’s an F-Y-I-I-I…They gon’ bang this here all summerti-i-ime.”

The lyrics left little doubt about how she feels about the criticism that has followed her son since he entered the league. In a week when Sanders is finally getting the opportunity he has been waiting for, the message framed his first start as both a football milestone and a statement to doubters.

From draft day slide to long-awaited opportunity

Sanders‘ path to this moment has been anything but straightforward. Coming out of college, he was widely projected as a first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, with many analysts believing he could go inside the top five. Instead, his name went uncalled throughout the entire first round and beyond. What was expected to be a short wait turned into one of the surprise storylines of draft weekend, before Cleveland finally grabbed him in the fifth round with the No. 144 pick.

The Browns then added another twist by pairing him with Gabriel, whom they had selected 50 picks earlier. Sanders opened his rookie year as a third-stringer behind veteran Joe Flacco and Gabriel, forced to bide his time while adjusting to the speed and complexity of the professional game.

His first real NFL action came in difficult fashion. Thrown into Sunday’s game against the Ravens after Gabriel left with a concussion, Sanders struggled against a physical defense that was ready to tee off on an inexperienced quarterback. He completed only four of sixteen passes for 47 yards with no touchdowns and one interception as the Browns fell 23 to 16.

Those numbers fueled familiar criticism, some of it coming from high-profile voices. Sanders has been the subject of skepticism from the moment he decided to turn pro, including pointed commentary from ESPN NFL analyst and former head coach Rex Ryan. For those critics, his debut was evidence that he was not ready.
