Philip Rivers set for to start in stunning return as Colts turn to veteran QB vs Seahawks

The Indianapolis Colts did not plan for this storyline in December. A season that began with promise has drifted into uncertainty, and now the franchise finds itself leaning on a quarterback many believed had long since closed the book on his NFL career.

Indianapolis once looked firmly in control of its playoff path after opening the year 8-2. But a three-game losing streak has reshaped the AFC South race, tightening the standings and turning every remaining matchup into a pressure-filled test. Injuries have only added to the tension, especially at quarterback.

That instability has led the Colts back to a familiar voice in the huddle. A veteran presence. A competitor who knows the building, the expectations, and the urgency of late-season football.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Philip Rivers is expected to start for the Colts this week against the Seattle Seahawks. The 44-year-old quarterback will be making his first NFL start since the 2021 playoffs, when he led Indianapolis against the Buffalo Bills in a wild-card matchup.

Rivers was signed to the practice squad earlier this week after Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles in Week 14. With backup Riley Leonard also dealing with a knee injury, the Colts were left thin at the position. The solution was unconventional but logical. Rivers spent the 2020 season in Indianapolis and already had a working relationship with head coach Shane Steichen from their time with the Los Angeles Chargers.

The reunion moved quickly. Rivers came in for a workout, showed enough to convince the coaching staff, and by Tuesday he was fully engaged. “Dadgummit, let’s freaking go,” Rivers reportedly told team officials, according to Rapoport.

Despite the dramatic return, Rivers has made it clear he is not chasing headlines. “I’m not here to stinking save the year or be a hero,” he said earlier this week. Still, steady quarterback play could make a real difference. At 8-5, the Colts are tied with the Houston Texans for second in the AFC South, one game behind the Jacksonville Jaguars. ESPN’s latest playoff projections place Indianapolis just outside the postseason field entering Week 15.

There are also long-term implications. By joining the active roster, Rivers is no longer eligible for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2026. As noted by Pro Football Reference, his eligibility now shifts to 2031.

For now, those details are secondary. Indianapolis is chasing wins, stability, and a way to halt its slide. Against Seattle, the Colts will place their trust in experience, leadership, and a quarterback who never truly stepped away from the game mentally. Whether it leads to a playoff push or simply steadies the ship, Philip Rivers is back in the NFL spotlight once again.
